Hello, I’m Ian Pointer.
I’m the author of Programming PyTorch for Deep Learning.
For the past few years, I’ve been digging deep into:
- Search/IR/NLP (in particular vector search and embeddings in e-commerce domains)
- Model training (fine-tuning & RLHF techniques)
- Evaluation of embedding model and LLMs
Currently, I work as the AI Research Lead at Bookend.AI, where I’m actively researching these topics:
- LLM Evaluation
- Active guidance for models (e.g. anti-jailbreaking and on-topicness)
- Embeddings
- Reranking
- Synthetic Data Generation

Currently I live in Cincinnati, OH, but have previously lived in Durham, NC, and I’m originally from the UK, living in the USA since 2011.
